Tempered Radicalism: Zhang Dongsun and Chinese Guild Socialism, 1913–1922

Abstract In the 1910s, guild socialism emerged as a response to particular social and political problems of Britain radical rebel against established English socialist movement. From beginning, was characterized by its “Englishness”, global influences have largely been neglected. Through case Zhang Dongsun, leading Chinese socialist, this article provides transnational comparative dimension examines how ideas were accepted, reinterpreted, localized in non-Western context. While guildsmen propagated strong anti-capitalist ideology highlighted industrial democracy, mass self-government, direct action, their comrades advocating, at least temporarily, domination bourgeoisie seeking temper ethos motivated October Revolution. Guild China deprived rebellious militant elements transformed into moderate, wait-and-see theory that could, Zhang's opinion, strike perfect balance between elitism democracy. elitist interpretation showed his agency ambition pursuit modernity for China, but ironically it active reinterpretation sealed fate socialism.
